專業(yè)概述
生物工程是：利用有生命物質(zhì)作為手段來參于改造自然現(xiàn)象的過程，對象可以是無生命物質(zhì)，例如發(fā)酵工程、酶工程等等；或以生物為對象，人為地改造生命現(xiàn)象的過程，例如醫(yī)學(xué)工程、農(nóng)業(yè)工程、細(xì)胞工程、基因工程等等。仿生學(xué)雖然不是利用生物作為手段，但也是通過深入了解生命現(xiàn)象的規(guī)律來解決工程技術(shù)問題，也可屬于廣義的生物工程學(xué)范疇之內(nèi)。即凡是以有生命物質(zhì)作為手段來影響或改變無生命現(xiàn)象，或用各種自然科學(xué)的方法、技術(shù)來影響或改變有生命現(xiàn)象的自然過程，以達(dá)到為人類服務(wù)的目的，都可以包含在生物工程范疇之內(nèi)。
生物工程主要研究基因工程、遺傳工程、蛋白質(zhì)工程、酶工程、細(xì)胞工程和發(fā)酵工程的理論及其在工、醫(yī)、農(nóng)、環(huán)境保護(hù)等部門中的開發(fā)和應(yīng)用，如研究改變遺傳因子組合，生產(chǎn)出有強(qiáng)抗病性的小麥；利用微生物的作用發(fā)酵香蕉，制作甜酒；還有大家熟知的克隆羊多利，就是由生物工程技術(shù)創(chuàng)造的；根據(jù)國際植物基因工程發(fā)展的新趨勢，還可以利用轉(zhuǎn)基因植物生產(chǎn)各種蛋白類藥物，吃了這類含藥物基因的食物，就可以起到治病防病的作用，等等。
生物工程常見研究方向和專業(yè)領(lǐng)域
生物工程技術(shù)分支多種多樣，有一種分類是將生物工程歸為三大類：
?生物加工工程：生物加工設(shè)計(jì)，生物催化，生物分離，生物信息學(xué)等。
?基因工程：生物合成，細(xì)胞工程，組織培養(yǎng)工程，基因轉(zhuǎn)移等。
?生物醫(yī)學(xué)工程：生物醫(yī)學(xué)技術(shù)，生物醫(yī)學(xué)診斷，生物醫(yī)學(xué)治療，生物力學(xué)，生物材料學(xué)等。
在這三大類中又分為很多更細(xì)的技術(shù)。
